Xingu Black Beer

Talk about people passionate about beer. Xingu Black Beer is the result of a couple from Vermont flying to Brazil to try to recreate a lost beer. The husband, a writer, had learned about a beer dating back to 1556 from the Amazon rainforest while researching an article on the history of beers in the world. They couldn’t find the original beer so they worked with a local as crazy as they were to find a brewery to help them bring it back to life.

The beer? It’s a dark, opaque rich brew with a touch of bitterness and some sweetness. Worth a trip to the Amazon? You decide.

Samuel Adams Boston Lager

Samuel Adams Boston LagerSamuel Adams Boston Lager is the original beer for the incredibly successful Boston Beer Company. When we say original, we don’t just mean from 1984 when the company was founded. We mean way back to 1860, when Jim Koch’s ancestor Louis Koch brewed it up in St. Louis, Missouri. Koch (the younger) used the same recipe in his kitchen. Since then it’s been tightened up and the company’s been purchased by Anheuser-Busch, but Koch is still there maintaining the family legacy. They better keep him or he might throw his beer into the harbor; it is Boston, after all.

Two Brothers Ebel’s Weiss

Two Brothers Ebel's WeissYour first question might be “Ebel’s Weiss? Don’t they mean edelweiss?” And the answer to that would be no. That’s because the Two Brothers in question are Jim and Jason Ebel. This is one of the brewery’s signature brews and is a traditional, unfiltered German hefeweizen.

Victory Prima Pils

There are lots of hops hiding under the full, frothy head of this Pils. All German malt subtleties linger beneath a long dry finish. This is one of Michael Jackson’s 500 Classic Brews. (Not that one. It’s the beer guy.) Victory Brewing Company was started by 2 guys from the corporate world who decided to take their love of beer to the next level through apprenticeships at Baltimore Brewing Company and the Technical University in Munich, Germany. This beer is very highly rated by ratebeer.com and other sites.

Krombacher Pils

In 1618 Germany a regulation was enacted that only restaurants that had their own brewery and kiln were allowed to sell beer. Since that was still on the books in 1803, Johannes Haas started a brewery in his father’s tavern in Krombach. They used water from a nearby mineral spring, carting it in barrels. The brewery still uses that same spring for their Krombacher Pils, one of the most popular beers in Germany and the most popular pilsner. In a country that loves its “pilseners”, that’s a statement. Hofbräu Oktoberfest

You may not be able to get to the Munich Beer Festival, but you can get a “taste” of it with Hofbräu Oktoberfest. It’s specifically brewed for the festival and is, according to the brewery, “an absolutely natural product; brewed from pure water, the best quality malt and exquisite hops”.

The brewery itself has been around for centuries. Hofbräuhaus was started in 1589 when the Duke of Bavaria wanted better beer. His advisers (obviously very smart people) suggested that he build his own brewery and the “Ducal Brewery” was born. Their website has a history of the brewery through the years, and not only is it an entertaining tale of one particular house but it’s also an education in German beer.
