In 1618 Germany a regulation was enacted that only restaurants that had their own brewery and kiln were allowed to sell beer. Since that was still on the books in 1803, Johannes Haas started a brewery in his father’s tavern in Krombach. They used water from a nearby mineral spring, carting it in barrels. The brewery still uses that same spring for their Krombacher Pils, one of the most popular beers in Germany and the most popular pilsner. In a country that loves its “pilseners”, that’s a statement.
